Typically these products are destined for atmospheric storage tanks as have typically been designed and built under API 650 as design and construction standard, and are maintained under API 653. IFR’s (Internal Floating Roofs) are installed in atmospheric storage tanks to reduce emissions from volatile hydrocarbons and chemicals. Available as non-contact skin and pontoon IFR or full contact HC (Honeycomb reinforced) design they represent BAT (Best Available Technique) or BACT (Best Available Control Technique) in preventing emissions while not representing an end-of-pipe solution. Tests conducted in the past decades have clearly shown emission reductions to exceed reduction percentages as required under the most stringent environmental standards such as EPA (global requirement, USA origin) or BREF Storage (EU-requirement, IPPC 2006). At the same time they meet the most stringent construction standards such as API 650, EN 14015 and EEMUA 159 as well as all safety standards such as NFPA 11 and ATEX standards on fire-detection, fire-fighting and explosive atmospheres. In these 3 decades we have built a wealth of experience for the all-important seal performance aspects as adequate design, reliability, suitable materials and minimum VOC-emissions (volatile organic compounds). We have pioneered aspects such as storage tank emission screening using OGI-tools (Optical Gas Imaging), working on the establishment of world’s first storage tank OGI-protocol in the Netherlands, the NTA 8399. Drain systems are of vital importance to the integrity of external floating roof tanks. As these are open tanks having a floating roof on top of the product stored they do collect and accumulate significant quantities of rainwater. This rainwater is than disposed off through product submerged drain systems, that have to ensure adequate rainwater run-off while also allowing the floating roof to move up and down and representing a tight system, not allowing product to leak into the drain line and run out from the tank (drain valve normally open) or to run on top of the floating roof (drain valve normally closed).
